Are you thinking about changing your look?  Are you tired of the same old color or highlights?  Or are you frustrated with frequent highlight maintenance?

If so then maybe you should consider getting hot & trendy Ombre Highlights.   This look is all over Hollywood at the moment.  Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Lopez and Khloe Kardashian have all been seen with Ombre Hair.

I personally love this look because it is low maintenance and looks good on both light and dark hair.

Haircare 102: Tips for Growing out your hair. Part 2

Here are a few more inside tips for taking care of and growing out your hair:

8.  Use the correct kind of elastics & clips to tie your hair back.  This is another common issue I see with some of my clients who have long hair and/or are growing out their hair.  Inevitably  during the grow out process you will get to the awkward stage.  The stage where you would rather shave your head than deal with the mop that currently refuses to do ANYTHING.  That’s because it’s too long for the previous style you had and it’s too short for the next phase.  Most clients end up pulling it back just to get it out of their face and many times use the wrong kind of elastics and/or twist the hair into a messy bun.   What happens is the elastics and/or bun place a great amount of tension and stress on the hair and it causes breakage.   My advice is to not pull your hair back really tight and don’t do that messy bun thing.  Always use clips with smooth edges and elastics with smooth fabric.  You can also use a little bit of hairspray to hold it in place.  I like Moroccan oil hairspray because it’s light, won’t dry the hair out and it smells awesome.

9. Always use a COMB to brush out wet or tangled hair.   Never ever use a brush to comb out wet or tangled hair.  Doing so causes major breakage!!  The hair is extremely fragile when it’s wet.  I tell my clients to first brush out their dry hair before they get into the shower and while in the shower to comb the conditioner through before rinsing it out.  If you do that then you shouldn’t have any tangles to comb out.  Lastly be sure that while shampooing that you massage the scalp with the pads of your fingers but don’t swirl the hair into a ball of knots in the process.  And you should also avoid using very hot water because it is extremely drying and will also fade color treated hair.  Shampoo hair with either warm or cool water to be safe. You may use a brush to style wet hair After it has been combed out.

image

10.  Use a satin or silk pillowcase.  Using a cotton pillowcase causes  friction, leading to breakage in some types of hair.  If you use a silk or satin pillowcase the hair will slide around under your head without any friction.  I recommend you change the pillowcase 2x a week though so your skin doesn’t breakout.  The oils from your scalp and any hair products you use sit on top of that kind of fabric so be sure to change the pillowcase more frequently.

image

11.  Hairdresser hopping during the grow out process.   There are certain ways to cut the hair so that it grows into a style quicker and your stylist has already started their technique on you.  I can tell you that all stylists have vastly different cutting techniques and if you have another stylist trim it for you that more than likely they are going to unintentionally undue all the work your regular stylist has started and set you back a couple months.  This is something I’ve seen a hundred times over the years.  My advice is stick with one stylist during the grow out process and/or during any corrective hair service like color.

image

12. Take a multivitamin.  If you have followed the aforementioned tips and your hair seems to not be growing go see your doctor.   Most people benefit from taking a multivitamin and it will certainly help your hair, skin & nails. But be sure to check with your doctor first to make sure it is safe to do so and to check if there isn’t a medical condition that may be causing your hair issue.  Vitamin deficiencies and thyroid disease for example can really do a number on your hair.  It can make it dry & brittle and also cause it to thin out dramatically.  Be safe and go see your doctor.

13. Are your glasses causing breakage? If you tend to wear your sunglasses on top of your head you should make sure that the screws/hinges on the sides of the glasses are hidden or smooth otherwise you will experience breakage near your temple area. If that is already a problem then perhaps a new pair of glasses are in order or try not wearing them on top of your head anymore.

This concludes my advice for growing out your hair.  I wish you luck on your way to getting it long and healthy.   Please feel free to post any questions and I will be happy to answer.   Thanks so much for reading my blog.   If you like my advice please share this link with your friends.

Healthy Haircare 101: Tips for growing out your hair, Part 1.

If you have decided to grow out your hair or have already been in the process and are frustrated by the lack of progress then this article is for you.

Here are some do’s and a few things that are a definite don’t if you expect your hair to get longer:

1.  Not getting regular trims along the way.   This one is important.  If you have split ends and don’t cut them off then they will continue to keep splitting and even though your hair is growing you won’t see any Length because the ends are breaking off little by little.

2.  Not laying off the highlights.  Depending on the condition of your hair it is a good idea to avoid doing any major highlighting during the grow out process.  If your hair is already damaged then absolutely under no circumstances should you get highlights.  If your hair is in good shape then I recommend doing highlights in small gradual steps to avoid drying the hair out during the grow out.

3.  Too much Heat. Put the flat iron down and back away and no one gets hurt!  I can guarantee that if you flat iron your hair regularly then your hair will not get longer and if it does it won’t look healthy and shiny.  The flat iron & curling iron are hot powerful tools that will destroy your hair with repeated use.  Yes I know you can’t possibly go out of the house with your hair looking like that…. Well I am here to tell you that if you want your hair to get longer then you are going to have to.  Sorry.  Does that mean you can never flat iron it?? No of course not.  Just save the iron for days you are going some place special and be sure to use a flat iron spray to protect it from the heat.  Flat irons get as hot as 450°!  Think about it for a minute, what would happen if you put your hand in the oven at 450°???  It would burn right?  What about your hair then?

image

4.  Not using professional salon products.  Using the right shampoo and conditioner does make a difference especially with hair that is in rough shape and is growing out.  Drug store brands are loaded with sulfates and fillers that just coat the hair.  You want a shampoo that will gently cleanse the hair (not strip) and a conditioner that strengthens from the inside out, not just coat the hair.

image

5.  Sun & chlorine.   With the warmer weather coming so does the summer hair nightmares.  You have to protect your hair from the sun.  That means using a leave in conditioner or styling product that has UV protection.  The sun will dry your hair out and also fade your color.  When sun bathing I recommend wearing a hat or wrapping a towel around your head.  Same advice for using a tanning bed, protect your hair by wrapping a towel around your head.  What about the pool?  Chlorine is no joke, it’s used in pools to kill bacteria.  It can strip your color in a single weekend.  Now imagine for a minute that you just bought an expensive pair of dark wash designer Jeans.  Would you consider rinsing them in the pool?  No of course not!  Why? Because they would get ruined!  That’s my point, if you just invested a lot of money in your hair than why would you dunk your hair in a chlorinated pool??  My advice is go in the pool but don’t dunk your head under water.  I also recommend that you wet your hair with regular water and put it up in a clip BEFORE getting in the pool then rinsing it immediately after you get out.

image

6.  Not getting in salon conditioning treatments.   Professional conditioning treatments are different than deep conditioners that you use at home.  These products are not for sale to the public.  They have a very high concentration of proteins that are to be used only by professionals in a salon.  The application and timing depends on the product being used.  In salon conditioning treatments deliver exceptional lasting results that can undue a multitude of problems.   Getting routine conditioning treatments with a trim will ensure that you give your hair what it needs to thrive.

7.  Do it yourself color.   Not a good idea.  There isn’t a lot of people that have successfully repeatedly colored their hair at home and have had it remain healthy.  Boxed color is harsh unfortunately and is made to be used on a wide range of hair types.  Salon color is formulated specifically for YOU, for your hair and preference.  It’s only strong enough to do the job it needs to do and nothing more and is also only applied to the hair that needs color like the roots.  Most home color gets applied incorrectly and is overlapped causing an unsightly banding effect.  With continued poor application the hair eventually gets completely damaged and requires corrective color.  Unfortunately in some cases the hair isn’t strong enough to undergo a corrective service and needs to be cut shorter.

To be continued….

So I hope this information helps.  I know some of it may be a drag and isn’t what you wanted to hear but unfortunately it is the truth.  You can grow your hair out but it takes time and proper care.

Makeup & skincare tips for a flawless glowing complexion:

If you are tired of having dull and uneven skin then stay tuned because I have some great skincare & makeup advice for you.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with tons of beauty products during my career.  When it comes to makeup I’m extremely picky.  I expect my products to look natural, blend smoothly and last all day.  I also have extremely sensitive skin so I am very careful with what I put on my face.  My clients always compliment me on my skin so I thought I would share a few of the products that have won my seal of approval:

image

Prescription Retin-A: My dermatologist suggested I try Retin-A after asking for anti-aging skincare advice. She told me that there isn’t another product on the market that combats the signs of aging better than Retin-A. With continued use fine lines, whiteheads & blackheads will disappear, larger pores will shrink and elasticity will improve, leaving you with beautiful younger looking skin.

I have to warn you that the first couple of months using Retin-A are miserable but it’s important to continue using it despite how awful it makes your skin look. Your skin will go through what is called the purging stage which involves getting rid of layers of dull, dead skin. Dealing with the dryness, flaking & peeling and the breakouts won’t be fun but it will be worth it in the end.

It’s important to use it correctly which minimizes the undesirable side effects in the beginning. Ask your dermatologist if Retin-A is right for you.

Dior Capture Totale  One Essential Skin Boosting Serum–

This product claims to give skin a smoother, firmer and younger look with continued use.  The serum is designed to promote  cellular regeneration beneath the skins surface.
I LOVE this product!! I noticed an immediate difference in my skin the very first time I used it.   It made my skin look smooth and it felt soft to the touch.  It also allowed my foundation to blend with ease. After about a week my skin looked more even and less dull.   I apply the serum after my moisturizer (I put it on after moisturizer because my skin is sensitive) and allow it to sit in for a couple minutes before I put on my makeup.  It might be a little pricey for some people,  the 1ounce retails for $95 and the large size retails for $150 but it is worth every penny.

Benefit CosmeticsThat Gal brightening face primer-

I apply this primer with my finger tips all over my face.  It helps prep the skin for foundation by providing a smooth surface so that the foundation doesn’t settle into any fine lines.  It also helps the makeup last all day. It retails for $29.

image

Bobby Brown Corrector in light bisque

I have really dark circles  under my eyes and I’m starting to develop tiny crows feet.  I’m so happy I found this product!!!   It’s AMAZING!!  It matches my skin perfectly and blends right in without settling into my crows feet. It brightens my eyes and lasts all day.  I never leave the house without it on.    I’ve tried MANY  concealers and this one out  performs them all.  Other brands either didn’t stay put or they settled into my crows feet making them look worse!!
I apply it to my eye area right after my primer using a Sephora Platinum concealer brush.   It retails for $22.

image

Dior Capture Totale Foundation #032

I am in love with this Dior foundation!  It is an anti aging serum infused foundation that glides on like silk.  With continued use the skin looks smoother and more radiant.   I apply it with a Sephora Platinum foundation brush and buff it right into my skin.  It blends beautifully and gives my skin a flawless glowing finish.  I definitely recommend applying your foundation with a brush instead of your fingers because it will give you a natural flawless look and you will use less product.  Taking a few extra minutes to use a foundation brush is worth it!  The foundation retails for $80.

image

Dior Capture Totale Loose Powder 001 Rose Lumiere

I’ve been using a loose powder to set my makeup for the past few years and this one by far is the best. It’s silky smooth and gives the skin a brightening boost.  It also makes my skin feel hydrated and keeps my makeup in place all day.   I apply it on top of my foundation using the Dior brush inside.  It retails for $65.

image

Benefit Posie Tint

This pink cheek and lip stain will give your face a school girl flush and will last for hours.   There are two other shades available, the original  Benetint that gives a red flush and one that is peachy coral.  These colors look great on all skin tones.  You can increase the amount of color you want by reapplying it.  It gives your face a pop of natural looking color.

I apply it AFTER my loose powder.   I swipe 3 strokes on the apples of my cheeks and quickly blend with my fingertip.  I also put a little on my lips and blend it with my pinky finger.  It retails for $29.

image

NARS The Multiple Stick in Copacabana

The Multiples can be used on the cheeks, lips and eyes and come in several different shades.

I prefer it in Copacabana and use it only as a highlighter.  I apply it to the bridge of my nose, my cheek bones, chin and forehead using my fingertips.  It glides on easy, looks natural and lasts for hours.  I love how it gives my face a subtle dewy glow especially on days when I didn’t get much sleep!  I keep it in my purse and reapply it when ever I want to look refreshed.  It retails for $39.  This stick is huge, I use it everyday and it lasts me more than a year!!

The aforementioned products are some of the best on the market. They are of high quality and last a very long time.  I usually get a year out of most products with proper use.  I’m sure the cost of this makeup may come as shock to those of you that are currently buying drug store  makeup.  I know it is pricey but I can honestly say that it is definitely worth the investment.  The right makeup can make you look years younger.  My skin has never looked or felt better. I get more compliments on my skin now than I did in my 20’s.  Having the right products makes a difference BUT using them properly is also important. When you visit the makeup counter be sure to ask the associate for advice.

My favorite place to purchase Makeup is at Nordstroms.   They have the best customer service and return policy.   Their associates are trained extremely well and go out of their way to assist you. If you live in the Boston area go to Nordstroms at the South Shore Plaza and ask for Alecia L. at the Dior counter.  She is awesome and knows her stuff!!  I’m really picky about how I wear my makeup but she did a FANTASTIC job.  She did a killer smokey eye on me!!  I really recommend that you go see her for a consultation.  She will do your makeup AND show you how to apply it.  Go experience the Nordstrom difference for yourself, it’s a real treat.

Thanks for reading and be sure to subscribe to my blog.  I’m going to be posting some makeup tutorials in the future showing you how to achieve a flawless finish,  how to do a smokey eye and how to apply makeup in 5 minutes.

It’s a 10 product review, Choosing the right hair products does make a difference!

Whether you are looking to maintain your already healthy hair or are looking to get your damaged hair back in shape, choosing what products to use can make a significant difference.

Not all hair products are alike.  Some are made for a specific hair type or problem.  Some are designed to give a cosmetic result, for instance temporally coating the hair with silicone to cut down on the frizz making blow drying easier.  The biggest issue with that type of product is that it doesn’t fix the root of the problem, it only covers it up.  More often than not if there is frizz it is because the hair is dry or damaged.  My approach to haircare is targeting the underlying problem.  I have found that once you give the hair what it needs it starts behaving and is more manageable.

So the big question is  “what do I use then”?  There are a million products on the market so I can imagine how confusing it must be for the average consumer, especially with all the commercials and magazine ads seducing us with the promise of luscious locks.  I can assure you that your hair will not look like the model’s hair just by using that product.  It really is not that simple period.  There aren’t any over the counter drug store hair products that produce optimal results.  Ideally your product regime should be customized for your hair by a professional hairstylist.

One of my favorite professional haircare lines that I recommend to my clients is “It’s a 10” .   This product line is relatively small and is easy to use.  The “It’s a 10” products run the gamut taking care of a wide range of hair issues and can be used on all types of hair.   Each of their products have multiple uses.  For example the Miracle Leave-in Product in it of itself has many benefits including; preventing split ends, stopping breakage, protecting hair color, adding shine, protection from heat styling, controls frizz and most importantly repairs dry, damaged hair.  That means having to buy less products because the “It’s a 10” line does it all.

image

Lastly, it’s important to use the products properly.  For someone with fine hair I recommend using the products with a lighter hand than someone with thick hair.  These products are of high quality and are very concentrated.  A little goes a long way.   Here are some basic directions:

Shampoo:  As soon as you get in the shower shampoo your hair.  (I recommend doing two shampoos) Use about the size of a nickle in the palm of your hand and rub hands together to get it to lather slightly.  Shampoo the hair and rinse.  Follow with the daily conditioner or mask. Please note that this shampoo does not lather like a typical shampoo and is probably different than what you’re used too.  It does not affect it’s ability to cleanse the hair.

Conditioning:  After shampooing gently squeeze the excess water from the hair and apply a quarter size (or less) amount of conditioner or mask to the palm of your hand.Rub your palms together to spread the product and apply to the hair starting at the ends and working up though the rest of the hair.  DO NOT  just plop the conditioner on  top of your head!  Let the conditioner sit on the hair while you continue your shower and RINSE it out right before you are ready to exit the shower.  Follow with the Miracle Leave-in Product.  By allowing the product to remain in your hair while you finished showering you gave the conditioner a chance to really work.  Under NO circumstances should you ever apply conditioner and then go to bed.  More isn’t better, in fact too much moisture can make your hair feel even dryer.  So please don’t go to bed with conditioner on your hair.  5-15 minutes max is a good rule of thumb at home.

Miracle Leave-in Product:  This product is designed to be left on the hair.  Depending on your hair texture spray between 4-6 pumps throughout the hair and comb through.  If your hair is fine you may want to spray the product in your hands and then apply it to your hair.  This product has a creamier texture than most leave-in products, remember a little goes a long way!

I highly recommend you give this product line a try.  When I have a client that comes in with some serious hair issues this is the product line I recommend for home care to help get their hair back in shape quickly.

I will be doing more reviews on hair products and makeup in the future so be sure to subscribe to my blog and share it on Facebook and twitter.    If you have a particular question about your hair please leave a comment or send me an email and I will respond.
